Things to Do in Beckley, WV

BeckleyWest Virginia, was founded in 1838 and continues to this day to be a city rich in American history and tradition. While exploring all that Raleigh County has to offer, it's well worth it to spend some quality time in Beckley with family and friends exploring its vibrant downtown and beautiful surrounding area. Here are some of the best things to do in Beckley, WV.

Explore Beautiful Parks

Beckley is located a half hour away from Grandview, an area located on the New River Gorge National River. This beautiful section of the park is home to plenty of opportunities for hiking, sightseeing, and exploring local wildlife. From Main Overlook, you'll be privy to scenic views of the river, an active railway line, and the quaint town of Quinnimont. Quinnimont has a distinguished history, as it was where the first coal was shipped out from the gorge in 1873.

To the west and south of Beckley - which is the largest city in southern West Virginia - are two beautiful national parks that you should also consider exploring: Monongahela National Forest and George Washington and Jefferson National Forest.

Tour Historic Mine

Located in New River Park in Beckley is the Philips-Sprague Mine, which is a historic coal mine that was opened in 1889. The first coal was shipped out in 1905, and operations continued until 1953. Today, the mine stands as a historic site named the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine, which works to educate visitors about coal mining and its history in the Appalachia region. Visit the mine to take a tour and learn more about Beckley's history, and while you're there, check out the Youth Museum with the family.

Experience Historic Founder's House and Museum

Head to the historic Wildwood House for an enjoyable tour of the 1836 log house filled with furniture from the period. Wildwood House is the historic home of Beckley's founder, General Alfred Beckley, so this tour will send you back in time to Beckley's very beginning.
